Summary

excellent book i read as a teenager when i was going to high school in germany。 it made me think a lot about how manipulative power could be & how easy it is to get people's consent about a totalitarian regime。 it's definitely a book I'd like to reread and pass on to my children。 excellent book i read as a teenager when i was going to high school in germany。 it made me think a lot about how manipulative power could be & how easy it is to get people's consent about a totalitarian regime。 it's definitely a book I'd like to reread and pass on to my children。 。。。more

Strasser’s novel: “The Wave” is a quick powerful read about the dangers of the loss of individuality for the greater good gone terribly wrong。 A quick page turner based on a true story, follows a teacher allowing an experiment to get carried away to a point that not being part of “the collective” becomes dangerous to outsiders。 Enjoyed Todd Strasser’s writing style and the fictional lesson that parallels a dark and realistic historical event。

one of my favorite books I had to read for classes

I was interested in reading this book because it is based on true events that happened in my town。 I didn’t really know anything else about it。 Well, for 120-odd pages, and written for a 13 year old, it was a worthwhile read。 Reminds me a little of 5th grade colonial days that turned revolutionary。

3/5 starsGood read that definitely helped me understand more how fascism works。Edit: Now, looking back I think that the end was actually quite weak。 It just ended after a “reveal”。 Was definitely kinda disappointing。

This was a hard book to read, but a very short one。 I study the Holocaust and I am a Holocaust educator。 I also read numerous books set during World War II and focused on the tragedies that surrounded it。 I would have loved to teach this book because my students were very much like Ben's wanting to know how millions of people could have just blindly followed a maniac leader and simultaneously turned a blind eye to the violence and deaths of minorities, who were also their friends, coworkers, and This was a hard book to read, but a very short one。 I study the Holocaust and I am a Holocaust educator。 I also read numerous books set during World War II and focused on the tragedies that surrounded it。 I would have loved to teach this book because my students were very much like Ben's wanting to know how millions of people could have just blindly followed a maniac leader and simultaneously turned a blind eye to the violence and deaths of minorities, who were also their friends, coworkers, and neighbors。 Given the serious subject matter, I would suggest teachers read this in tandem with other Holocaust YA books, especially those focused on the lead up to the Holocaust such as The Boy Who Dared and Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow, which speak to Laurie's point of view in this novel。 。。。more

A must read for any student studying the Holocaust。

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this。 Yes, it was predictable and written for a YA audience, but it does an excellent job of explaining how a charismatic leader or a fascist movement can gain power over a weak-minded population。I am considering using this book when teaching the rise of the Nazi Party and Hitler in Germany。

I read this book in one sitting。 It’s incredibly easy to read with zero fluff- perfect for the classroom。 This is a great book to read as a class when preparing to dive into the Holocaust。 Highly recommend for teachers。

I read this book as a teen & others by Strasser and remembered enjoying them。 Behind the Bastards recently did a podcast episode about The Wave, so I decided to revisit the book。 It was fine, definitely written for a younger audience & obviously based on an “after school special” style teleplay。 The timeline was incredibly confusing & the story lacked a lot of depth。 I would love to hear more “where are they now” stories about the folks involved in the original real life events。

Un livre qui fait réfléchir, comment l’être humain est aussi facilement manipulable en peu de temps。 Une histoire vraie lorsqu’un professeur d’histoire crée un mouvement expérimental dans un paisible lycée californien。

It was interesting to read in a classroom, with quite intimate characters and resolutions to problems。 4/5 would recommend。

Étudié au collège, en classe de 4e, « La Vague » fut l’une de mes premières approches du monde littéraire。 Roman palpitant, son histoire surprend et interroge sérieusement sur les dérives potentielles de notre société。 À lire impérativement。

Nothing spectacular about the writing, but subject interesting as it was based on true events。 This led to interesting discussions with my teen who also read the book。

Being German, I may have a special relationship with these dark times of our history。 My grandparents lived during the Nazi regime in Germany, we talked a lot about this time in school, and it is a very omnipresent part of our history in my generation。 We grew up with the mantra "never again!"In my opinion, this book shows how some patterns of basic human behavior which are hidden in almost any individual, group, and society can be activated, instrumentalized, and get out of control。 If you look Being German, I may have a special relationship with these dark times of our history。 My grandparents lived during the Nazi regime in Germany, we talked a lot about this time in school, and it is a very omnipresent part of our history in my generation。 We grew up with the mantra "never again!"In my opinion, this book shows how some patterns of basic human behavior which are hidden in almost any individual, group, and society can be activated, instrumentalized, and get out of control。 If you look closely at our world today, we were able to control better the beast hidden in us much better than ever before, but, unfortunately, from time to time, it's been awakened and leads to tremendous pain and suffering for those involved。 This book is a great reminder that all of us are not filed from it and that it's up to all of us to always be on alert and fight fascism, discrimination, and injustice wherever it occurs。 。。。more

This story of a social experiment out of control is one I’ve wanted to read for a long time。 How could have society gone along with Hitler and his youth? It’s something that seems like a distant historic fact。 But recent events and Covid-fears made me decide that now is the time for this book。 Ben the teacher starts a lesson that turns into The Wave。 It brings discipline and other traits that seem desirable。 It spreads。 But kids stop reflecting deeply or for themselves。 Laurie the popular smart This story of a social experiment out of control is one I’ve wanted to read for a long time。 How could have society gone along with Hitler and his youth? Easy to read, lays out the arguements of the collective vs the individual in an interesting and practical way。 "The whole idea of The Wave is that the people in it have to support it。 If we're really a community, we all have to agree。” "It was frightening how easily they would put their faith in your hands, how easily they would let you decide for them。 If people were destined to be led, Ben thought, this was something he must make sure they learned: to question thoroughly, never to put your fai Easy to read, lays out the arguements of the collective vs the individual in an interesting and practical way。 "The whole idea of The Wave is that the people in it have to support it。 If we're really a community, we all have to agree。” "It was frightening how easily they would put their faith in your hands, how easily they would let you decide for them。 If people were destined to be led, Ben thought, this was something he must make sure they learned: to question thoroughly, never to put your faith in anyone's hands blindly。” 。。。more
